Hide ‘n seek

Thank you to everyone for the kind words and support about the loss of our kitten, Spots, last night. We buried her this morning at the top of the hill in our backyard, and the girls (Abby and Hannah at least) got to say goodbye. They are sad (Hannah told me this morning that this is the saddest day of her life), but also very matter-of-fact about Spots’ death, which is normal for their ages, I think.

I am doing better – especially when I’m not thinking about it. I find myself telling Snuggly that I’m sorry every time I see her though, and it’s hard to watch the four babies play together without being sad for the one who’s not with them anymore. I think it’ll be easier as the other kittens go to new homes, so there won’t be the constant reminder.

We did turn this experience into a learning opportunity for the girls as well, and have explained how important it is to be careful and not running or jumping around near the kittens (something which has been concerning us anyway). But I also made sure that they understand that even if they do accidentally step on one of the kittens, that they won’t do the kind of damage that I did, since they don’t weigh nearly as much. I don’t want them to get to afraid and freaked out to go near them – but the lesson in being careful is a good one, I think.

I had planned on using these pictures for today’s post before the accident last night, because I love the photos and the story behind them. I am going to still post the photos and story in honor and memory of the little kitten who looked so much like her sister. Rest in peace, Spots.

Now that Snuggly’s kittens are 5 weeks old, we’ve given them pretty much the run of the living room. The babies have been loving all of the space – and the opportunity to find hiding spaces to get away from little hands and all of the noise and activity going on throughout the day.

We have a sectional couch, and one of the first places that the kittens discovered was the space between the back of the couch and the wall. It also didn’t take long for them to discover the little triangular-shaped area in the corner, behind the curve of the couch, where we have a free-standing halogen lamp. The blanket that we usually keep slung over the back of the couch had fallen behind it, into that little area, creating a nearly perfect little kitten nest. And we’ve discovered that the babies love to snuggle up together back there to sleep or just rest up from all of the playing they do throughout the day.

As soon as the girls discovered that they could see the kittens if they looked over the back of the couch, we were presented with this image:

And this has become a common sight in our living room over the past few days. I can’t blame them though, especially when I look back there and see what’s got them so entranced…

The kitten on the right is Spots, our angel kitty.

The loss of a pet is a hard lesson learned for all involved. You’ve handled it well and in the end they will thank you for it, I’m sure.

Sorry I am so behind on my hosting and commenting duties. Getting a stomach virus made looking at a computer screen just too much this weekend.
