Thursday Thirteen #28 – Maybe we’ll be better prepared next year…

Somehow Valentine’s Day snuck up on us this year. Yes, we knew it was coming, and we sat down and did the girls’ Valentine’s cards over the weekend (well most of them anyway). I thought we were actually fairly prepared. Abby and Hannah took their cards to school earlier in the week to deliver into all of their classmates’ mailboxes and I somehow put Valentine’s Day out of my mind.

GirlsMakingValentines_002GirlsMakingValentines_004

Which was a mistake. Because here’s what my Valentine’s Day has encompassed so far:

  1. Procrastinating about mailing out the Valentine’s cards that the girls made for Mary’s and Kristi‘s kids since we knew we wouldn’t see them between the weekend and today. Yes, the cards are all still sitting on our kitchen counter. They’re done though – that should count for something, right? :)

  2. Getting to church last night for dinner and classes and having the girls receive Valentine’s cards from several of the other kids. Hmm, probably should have thought to make some to bring…

  3. Forgetting to have Hannah finish her Valentine cards for the other kids at daycare last night after we got home from church, so she skipped breakfast (bad Mommy!) and got them done this morning…

  4. Searching through two baskets of clean laundry, Hannah’s shirt drawer and (just in case) the girls’ hamper this morning, attempting to find the pink sweatshirt with hearts on it that would be perfect for Hannah to wear today (and that I’d completely forget to locate and set out last night). Settling for a different pink shirt when the heart one was nowhere to be found.

  5. Realizing that the girls really should give cards to the daughters of our neighbor who gets them on the bus in the mornings for us (their girls are friends with our girls too), so had both girls write out Valentines for them as well after Abby finished breakfast…

  6. Remembering as I was about to finally get in the shower, that I’d bought little 2-card kits for Abby and Hannah to make Valentine cards for their teachers and our daycare provider – and I’d completely forgotten about them until now. Grabbing the kits out of the drawer and instructing the girls to make the cards, but forget the glitter glue since there’s no way it would dry in the 10 minutes before they had to leave for school…

  7. Making sure that the girls had all necessary Valentines in hand as they left the house this morning to head straight to the bus stop (since we ran out of time for them to go to our neighbors’ as usual…).

  8. Driving Becca to daycare, and realizing that she’ll probably get Valentines from the other kids, but I never even thought to buy any for her to ‘give’ to them…

  9. Trying to get everything done and leave enough time to give the girls the books and candy ring pops that I’d bought for them for Valentine’s Day before we all had to leave for school, daycare and work this morning. Nope, not going to happen! We’ll have to give them out to the girls after we get home tonight.

  10. Thinking to myself as I drove to work that I probably should have at least bought a card or something for Ron. We don’t usually buy expensive gifts or anything for each other, but I think I usually at least get him a card. Don’t I?

  11. Watching a DVD that a co-worker’s wife made for him for Valentine’s Day with photos of them over the past 40 years together set to music, and really, really wishing that I’d at least bought Ron a card. Wondering if there are still Valentine’s Day cards available at the stores today or if they’ve all been removed already to make way for Easter merchandise…

  12. Recalling that I had at one point thought about having the girls send Valentine’s cards to their grandparents. Oops.

  13. Understanding that I definitely should have started our Valentine’s preparations sooner, like the minute that Christmas was over. Maybe next year… :)

I do have an excuse though – and it’s now a defined medical condition! Check it out if you don’t believe me… ;)

Fortunately, my kids are still too young to need cards for their classmates. But even so, I work better under stress and always wait until the last minute for everything.

We were all ready…cards sitting by teh front door, ready to go. And then, we had a 2-hour delay this morning(“winter” weather). Poor kids. My kindergartener will have to have her party tomorrow!
    Happy T-13!

Yeah, that DVD compilation puts me to shame for sure! We just do the kids simple store bought Valentine’s and don’t feel guilty when all their classmates give them fancy homemade ones with lace, ribbon and candy. Just ignore the Supermoms!

Yep! I used to feel guilty about that, but not any more. My kids love and are so proud of their store bought Valentines, and I made a conscious decision not to send any candy this year – they get enough as it is!

When it becomes that much work a holiday starts not being fun anymore.

True… Although it is still a ton of fun for the kids, and that’s why it’s worth it. :)

Get your hubby a card. There’s still cards to be had. Most of the guys haven’t even bought theirs yet. Have a great TT and Valentine’s Day. :)

Hi, interesting list!! I procrastinate a lot and don’t really do valentines day anyway. When I lived with my parents we sort of did it, my parents use to give us little gifts. My TT list is here: http://lifes-adventures.net
    Cheers!!!

Mommy Brain, well that explains everything! Thank you for finally shedding light on this medical condition that my male doctor was clueless about. I knew it had a name. Perfect!! Happy Valentines to you my friend. You are one of the best mother’s I know. I hope Ron bought you something very nice, because you deserve it!!! I know how it goes, we get so caught up in making sure are kids have all the stuff for school, and have their gifts, the hubby is at the bottom of the list. I did manage to get Daddy man a CD this year, which I wrapped, without tape in red tissue paper. Meanwhile, the girls had beautiful, Valentine Bags, all decorated and pretty, to opent their gifts. LOL. Oh well, they will only be living at home for a short time, and it sure goes by fast.
Take care and enjoy your night.
    XOXOXO
