I was lucky enough to grow up within walking distance of my elementary school – and had another great park within easy bike riding distance as well. But I know there are many kids growing up who don’t have that luxury. My own kids were among them until last summer when our city constructed a park within our neighborhood that’s only a couple of blocks from our house. Being able to walk down there whenever we want to has been wonderful – and is something that every kid should be able to do as well. KaBOOM! is a non-profit organization dedicated to just that – their mission is to find and/or create play spaces within walking distance for every child. This doesn’t just mean kids who have parks nearby – but who have usable play spaces that aren’t run down or unsafe for them to play in.
Mom Central (along with other blogging groups) has teamed up with KaBOOM! to try and locate 100,000 play spaces in just 100 days. Play spaces include things like a playground, field, a skate park, roller hockey rink, lake, dog park, community center, basketball court or ice rink – any place where kids can engage in unstructured play for free or a nominal fee. Adding play spaces to their listing is easy – all you have to do is locate the play space (either by address or cross streets), then add one photo and one rating to it. And for every play space added within the 100-day period on behalf of Mom Central, KaBOOM! will donate $1 to Jumpstart, a non-profit that brings at-risk preschool children and caring adults together to improve literacy.
This listing can benefit everyone – if you are traveling or visiting a new area, locating the nearest play space is just a few clicks away. But the more play spaces which are added – the more complete and comprehensive the entire listing will be. So, please take a few moments to join and add your favorite play spaces. You will be helping out two great causes – and that’s certainly a win-win situation for everyone. 🙂
