I don’t wear glasses – unless you count sunglasses in the summertime. However both my husband and my oldest daughter do wear glasses, and since they both also happen to be the most absent-minded ones in the family, we tend to end up replacing their glasses much more often than I would like. When I was laid off from my full-time job last summer, we lost my vision insurance coverage and my husband’s company doesn’t offer it at all. So I was absolutely thrilled to learn about EyeBuyDirect.
What they are:
EyeBuyDirect is the world’s leading online optical retailer – offering full prescription eyeglasses for as little as $7.95. Their vision is “to empower vision for anyone, anywhere”. From their website:
EyeBuyDirect.com is a prescription eyewear website offering an extensive range of high quality, affordable frame and lens packages. The site offers its budget-conscious and style-savvy shoppers a fast, simple and efficient way to browse an extensive online catalogue, and enables them to purchase eyewear from the comfort of their own homes.
As a manufacturer, supplier and retailer of optical supplies, EyeBuyDirect is not only involved in every step of the eyewear production and distribution process, but has also developed an efficient, streamline approach to the optics supply chain.
By using their EyeTry feature, you can upload a photo of yourself to virtually try-on your desired frames and choose the style, size and color that you like the best. Then simply enter in your prescription details (or request a pair of ‘Fashion’ glasses with blank lenses). Since you can see how the glasses will look, ordering online becomes easier and more convenient than stopping in person to try on and order your frames.
Here’s my our take on them:
I was thrilled when offered the chance through the Family Review Network to order and review a pair of glasses from EyeBuyDirect. I was hoping to get new glasses for my daughter – but unfortunately came to find out that you can only order adult-sized frames (ages 12 and up). But since my husband lost his glasses and needed a new pair anyway, it worked out well.
We began by uploading a photo of my husband that we took with his computer’s webcam. It only took a moment to upload, and then we were able to start trying frames on him. He definitely looks better with metal frames that don’t stand out too much. The ordering process was easy enough – although we did have to make a quick phone call to his optometrist to find out what his ‘PD’ (pupillary distance) is. Apparently that’s a crucial measurement to have when ordering glasses online so as to ensure that you’re looking out through the correct portion of the lenses when you’re wearing the frames.
Once we ordered the glasses, they took about 10 days to ship and we received them just under two weeks later. They came exactly as specified, so he’s very happy with them – and I think they look quite good on him:
I was very impressed to see that the glasses arrived in a hard plastic case – and also came with a cleaning cloth as well.
What really made an impact though is that these glasses – frames and lenses, cost considerably under $100 to order (even when including shipping charges). And we were able to add some options like anti-glare lenses and scratch protection that we haven’t always been able to afford before, even when we had vision insurance. Now, not that I’m hoping that this pair gets lost by any means – but I will certainly feel better about buying a replacement pair if or when we have to, because the cost through EyeBuyDirect is so extremely reasonable. I only wish they made kids’ glasses as well, since our daughter is the one whose prescription tends to change quite often.
Unfortunately I don’t have the EyeTry photo that we used when ordering my husband’s glasses to show you the comparison with the real thing. So I thought I’d take a quick look through and see what I would look like in glasses, since my 40th birthday is approaching in a couple of years and I keep hearing that’s about when you start needing reading glasses (sigh).
So in a couple of years I could maybe order some frames like these:
or if I’m feeling particularly funky or courageous, maybe some like these:
I’m almost wishing I needed them right now – this was just way too much fun. 🙂
The bottom line:
EyeBuyDirect offers quality frames and lenses at prices that are extremely affordable. And with the option to virtually ‘try on’ the frames, you’ll be sure to find the perfect style, color and fit for yourself or whomever else in your family wears glasses.
Where can you find them?:
The site is located at http://www.eyebuydirect.com. Frames start as low as $7.95, and range in price up to around $135. Designer frames and sunglasses are available, as are ‘fashion’ (clear lenses) glasses, rimless frames and bifocals (not every frame can be made as bifocals however).
